Reubens

Well, that was fun. I learned a lot from people's posts about tipping. Obviously, we'll return to the subject.
In the meantime, a subject that people probably don't get quite as worked up about: corned beef, sauerkraut, rye bread, Russian dressing and cheese. I've been thinking about trying to find the best Reuben in the Greater Cincinnati area. Which I think will be hard, because they don't vary in real obvious ways. But I had a bad one the other day and I have faith that someone does them really especially well. I have a few ideas but would be interested in your nominations. Do you like them at Paula's downtown, Izzy's? Have you ever come across any interesting variations? Is it the only way you ever eat sauerkraut?

Izzy's reuben is alright, but I bet that there are some really great ones out there. Anyone care to share??

I really miss the reuben that the old Scully's On The Skywalk used to have. I think that it was called the Blue Chip. That was a great place.

Izzy's is good. I prefer Paula's...

Then again, the way I prefer to eat my Reuben really isn't a Reuben at all... I prefer it on wheat bread and without Swiss. But I love the piquancy of the dressing. And give me extra sauerkraut, please.

i use a vinegary cole slaw (mom's) instead of the kraut... i also grill with a garlic-sriracha butter... it's different, but good

I enjoy Paula's version as well as Christy's Lendharts too.

I can't think of their names but the guys who sell ruebens down in Covington for all the festivals. They are usually in front of Pachinko and Zazou.....

Woe to us vegetarians for who they haven't made a really good corned beef substitute yet. My mom used to make the stuff and I loved it - it's not the taste of meat that turned me veggie. There is a faux deli meat version of corned beef, but I don't like it much. If anyone knows of a really good substitute, I'm all ears.

Just had a really nice variation last weekend in Pittsburgh: a kielbasa Reuben at Fat Heads South Side Saloon. Very tasty with one of the over 200 beers they have available there. Locally, I really like the turkey Reuben at Shakey's Pub and Grub in Florence.

(Posted this earlier, but it seems to have disappeared into the ether.)

I just had a Ruebenator for lunch at izzy's. Actually, I split it. And I suddenly realized that Izzy's Reubens aren't grilled. I always think of them as grilled--like a grilled cheese sandwich or patty melt. In fact, I think maybe it's a requirement! Thoughts?

I like most everything at Izzys except the Reuben, because they don't grill it.

Cold, cold beer and a grilled Rueben...oh man.

I make a Ruben with corned beef from Bleh Avril's, on tasted shadeau rye bread with a crunchy fennel slaw, Amish baby swiss and my version of thousand island....

pretty tasty with an ice cold beer.

Toasted "Turkey" Ruebens rock!

It is my understanding that a sandwich substituting turkey in place of corned beef that is otherwise configured like a Reuben is generally referred to as a "Rachel"

Izzy's reubens (and sandwiches in general) are mediocre. The old man is whirling in his grave!

What I want to know is, short of making it yourself, where does one find Russian dressing for sale in greater Cincinnati? I've had to get it when I make trips back to NY on occasion.

Izzy's is vastly overrated. Paula's is not bad but the price is much too high and the serving sizes much too small.
