Election Day eats

So I'm going to let you in on a little secret about working in a newsroom: No matter how much we might complain about the long hours, there are a lot of us who actually love working when there are elections, natural disasters or other big news events. Why? It's not just the thrill of getting the big scoop. It's the thrill of getting the free food. In other, smaller newsrooms that I've worked in, that amounted to the editor ordering a bunch of pizzas. But at the Enquirer, they treat hardworking Election Day employees right. There's a big spread in the conference room behind me right now, and thanks to some editor's edict, there are are "healthy" options, one of which is "vegetarian barbecue." It's basically a vegetarian sloppy joe mix, probably crumbled soy protein with some sort of barbecue-like sauce. I sampled some, and it was pretty good, if a bit sweet. I'm curious what my meat-eating co-workers thought. And for those of you in the outside world: Vegetarian barbecue--oxymoron, or soon to be a staple at picnics everywhere?

My initial reaction was "yuck."
But I did try it - it's scarily meaty (with a funny aftertaste), and a little too sweet and vinegary for me. I don't eat much meat, but when I do, bring on the REAL barbecue.
Oh - can you please pass a bun?

I love the idea of veggie BBQ, but I'd rather have a bunch of yummy veggies in some good sauce rather than the veggie "crumbles."
